天地否
Hexagram 12 is the direct counterpart to Tai (Peace). Where Tai describes harmonious exchange, Pi describes its absence — a period when heaven and earth have separated, communication has broken down, and the conditions for progress are genuinely unfavorable.
否之匪人，不利君子贞，大往小来。
天地不交、闭塞不通：此时不利于君子守常道——大的退去、小的到来，宜收敛自保。
Interpretive translationStandstill. Evil people do not further the perseverance of the superior man. The great departs; the small approaches.
彖曰：否之匪人，不利君子贞，大往小来。则是天地不交而万物不通也，上下不交而天下无邦也。内阴而外阳，内柔而外刚，内小人而外君子，小人道长，君子道消也。
象曰：天地不交，否；君子以俭德辟难，不可荣以禄。
天地之气不相交通，闭塞之象；君子以节俭收敛之德躲避危难，不可追求禄位荣华。
拔茅茹，以其汇，贞吉亨。
象曰：拔茅贞吉，志在君也。
When ribbon grass is pulled up, the sod comes with it. Each according to his kind. Perseverance brings good fortune and success.
包承，小人吉，大人否亨。
象曰：大人否亨，不乱群也。
They bear and endure; inferior people fare well, the great man accepts the standstill and thereby succeeds.
包羞。
象曰：包羞，位不当也。
They bear shame.
有命无咎，畴离祉。
象曰：有命无咎，志行也。
He who acts at the command of the highest remains without blame. Those of like mind partake of the blessing.
休否，大人吉。其亡其亡，系于苞桑。
象曰：大人之吉，位正当也。
Standstill is giving way. Good fortune for the great man. 'What if it should fail?' — he ties it to a cluster of mulberry shoots.
倾否，先否后喜。
象曰：否终则倾，何可长也。
The standstill comes to an end. First standstill, then good fortune.
Structure
Pi is formed by Heaven (Qian ☰) above Earth (Kun ☷). Heaven rises further upward; earth sinks further downward. The two move apart rather than toward each other. There is no exchange, no communication, no productive meeting of forces. This is the image of stagnation.
Core meaning
The central message of Pi is that this is not a favorable time for major initiatives. The environment is not supportive. Pushing forward against the current tends to waste energy without producing results. The wise response is to withdraw, conserve, and wait for conditions to change.
This does not mean complete inaction. Pi rewards those who use the difficult period to strengthen their inner resources, clarify their values, and prepare for when the cycle turns. The hexagram is not permanent — it is a phase, and phases end.
In Liuyao readings, Pi often signals that external conditions are working against the querent's goals. It can indicate blocked communication, unresponsive environments, or situations where the usual channels are not functioning. The question is whether to keep pushing or to step back and reassess.
In divination
When Pi appears, the practical counsel is caution. This is not the time to launch new ventures, make major commitments, or force outcomes. It is a time to protect what you have, maintain your integrity, and avoid being drawn into situations that will be difficult to exit.
Pi is generally unfavorable for most active questions. It is more neutral for questions about whether to wait, withdraw, or consolidate — in those cases, it often confirms that the cautious path is correct.
