Hexagram

Hexagram 6 — Song / Conflict (讼)

Hexagram 6 addresses situations of dispute, contention, and the pull toward prolonged conflict. Its counsel is generally cautious: even when you have a strong case, pressing it to the limit often costs more than it gains.

Structure

Song is formed by Heaven (Qian ☰) above Water (Kan ☵). Heaven moves upward; Water flows downward. Two strong forces moving in opposite directions — this is the image of conflict. Both sides have energy and conviction, which is exactly what makes resolution difficult.

Core meaning

Song does not say conflict is always wrong. Sometimes a dispute must be addressed directly. But the hexagram consistently warns against taking conflict all the way to its conclusion. Partial resolution — settling in the middle rather than fighting to the end — is usually the wiser outcome.

The danger in Song is that both parties believe they are right. When two strong wills collide without a mediating force, the process tends to escalate beyond what either side originally intended. The hexagram asks whether the cost of winning is worth what will be lost in the process.

In Liuyao readings, Song often signals that a situation has become adversarial in ways that may not be immediately visible. It can point to legal matters, workplace disputes, relationship tensions, or internal conflicts where competing drives are pulling in different directions.

In divination

When Song appears, the practical question is whether the conflict can be resolved early or whether it has already escalated past the point of easy settlement. Early resolution is almost always preferable. If the situation requires a third party or mediator, that is often a sign the hexagram is pointing toward.

Song is generally unfavorable for new ventures, partnerships, or situations requiring trust and cooperation. It is more neutral for questions about whether to pursue a legal or formal dispute — though even then, caution is advised.
