Hexagram 55 — Fēng / Abundance (丰)

Hexagram 55 describes abundance — the moment of fullness when power and clarity combine to create maximum brightness. Fēng is the noon of the day, the summer solstice of the year, the peak of a cycle. The hexagram teaches how to inhabit this fullness without anxiety about its inevitable passing.

Structure

Fēng is formed by Thunder (Zhen ☳) above Fire (Li ☲). Thunder represents movement and power; Fire represents clarity and illumination. Together they create a moment of maximum energy and visibility — the thunder's power combined with the fire's light produces an overwhelming brightness. The lower trigram Li also represents the sun, reinforcing the image of noon-day fullness.

Judgment and Image

The Judgment states: Abundance has success. The king attains abundance. Be not sad. Be like the sun at midday. The Image shows both thunder and lightning — the superior person decides lawsuits and carries out punishments. The reference to the king is significant: abundance is not a private possession but a public responsibility. The image of deciding lawsuits points to the use of clarity and power in service of justice — the proper use of the peak moment.

Core meaning

The central teaching of Fēng is that abundance must be inhabited fully and used well. The counsel not to be sad is addressed to those who, even at the peak of their power and prosperity, are already grieving its passing. This anticipatory grief is a waste of the peak moment — it prevents full engagement with what is actually present.

The sun at midday is the model: it shines with full intensity, without holding back and without anxiety about the afternoon. It simply is what it is, completely, for as long as it is. This is the attitude Fēng counsels: full presence in the moment of abundance, without clinging and without premature mourning.

In Liuyao readings, Fēng often appears when the querent is at or near a peak — of career success, creative output, relationship intensity, or personal power. The hexagram affirms the reality of this abundance while counseling against two opposite errors: taking it for granted (failing to use it well) and clinging to it (failing to enjoy it fully because of fear of loss).

The image of deciding lawsuits points to the proper use of peak power: clarity and decisiveness in service of justice. When one has maximum resources and visibility, the responsibility to act rightly is also at its maximum. Abundance is not an end in itself but an opportunity for significant action.

In divination

When Fēng appears in a reading, it signals a time of peak power, clarity, and abundance. For career questions, it may indicate a moment of maximum influence that should be used decisively. For personal matters, it affirms a period of fullness and counsels full engagement rather than anxious holding.

Fēng is favorable for decisive action, using one's full resources, and situations requiring maximum clarity and power. It is unfavorable for hesitation, holding back, or allowing the peak moment to pass unused.
