火山旅
Hexagram 56 depicts the wanderer — the traveler in foreign lands, without the support of home, community, or established position. Lǚ teaches the art of moving through unfamiliar territory: the combination of inner independence and outer adaptability that allows one to find shelter and sustenance without roots.
旅：小亨，旅贞吉。
羁旅在外、无所依归：只可得小亨通；行旅之人守正、谦谨自持则吉祥。
Interpretive translationThe Wanderer. Success through smallness. Perseverance brings good fortune to the wanderer.
彖曰：旅，小亨，柔得中乎外，而顺乎刚，止而丽乎明，是以小亨，旅贞吉也。旅之时义大矣哉！
象曰：山上有火，旅；君子以明慎用刑，而不留狱。
山上有火，过而不留；君子效法它，明察而谨慎地施用刑罚，不拖延狱事。
旅琐琐，斯其所取灾。
象曰：旅琐琐，志穷灾也。
If the wanderer busies himself with trivial things, he draws down misfortune upon himself.
旅即次，怀其资，得童仆贞。
象曰：得童仆贞，终无尤也。
The wanderer comes to an inn, has his property with him, and wins the steadfastness of a young servant.
旅焚其次，丧其童仆，贞厉。
象曰：旅焚其次，亦以伤矣。以旅与下，其义丧也。
The wanderer's inn burns down. He loses the steadfastness of his young servant. Danger.
旅于处，得其资斧，我心不快。
象曰：旅于处，未得位也。得其资斧，心未快也。
The wanderer rests in a shelter, obtains his property and an ax — but his heart is not glad.
射雉一矢亡，终以誉命。
象曰：终以誉命，上逮也。
He shoots a pheasant. It drops with the first arrow. In the end this brings both praise and office.
鸟焚其巢，旅人先笑后号咷。丧牛于易，凶。
象曰：以旅在上，其义焚也。丧牛于易，终莫之闻也。
The bird's nest burns up. The wanderer laughs at first, then must needs lament and weep. Through carelessness he loses his cow. Misfortune.
Structure
Lǚ is formed by Fire (Li ☲) above Mountain (Gen ☶). Fire moves upward and does not linger; the mountain is stationary and immovable. The fire travels over the mountain — it illuminates but does not settle, warms but does not take root. This image captures the essence of the wanderer: moving through a stable world without becoming part of it, carrying one's own light.
Judgment and Image
The Judgment states: The Wanderer. Success through smallness. Perseverance brings good fortune to the wanderer. The Image shows fire on the mountain — the superior person is clear-minded and cautious in imposing penalties, and does not allow lawsuits to drag on. The counsel of smallness is key: the wanderer who makes modest, careful moves survives and even prospers; the wanderer who overreaches quickly finds themselves without shelter or support.
Core meaning
The central teaching of Lǚ is the art of being a stranger. The wanderer has no established position, no network of relationships, no accumulated goodwill to draw on. Everything must be earned fresh in each new place. This requires a particular combination of qualities: inner self-sufficiency (not needing external validation), outer adaptability (fitting into new environments without losing oneself), and careful judgment (knowing when to move on).
The counsel of smallness is not about diminishing oneself but about appropriate scale. In foreign territory, grand gestures and ambitious claims are likely to be misread or resented. Small, careful, genuine actions build the trust that eventually creates a place for the wanderer. The fire that travels over the mountain illuminates without burning — it gives without taking, moves without destroying.
In Liuyao readings, Lǚ often appears when the querent is in a transitional state — between jobs, between relationships, between phases of life. The hexagram validates the experience of being without a fixed position while counseling the particular wisdom that such a state requires.
