Hexagram 56 — Lǚ / The Wanderer (旅)

Structure

Lǚ is formed by Fire (Li ☲) above Mountain (Gen ☶). Fire moves upward and does not linger; the mountain is stationary and immovable. The fire travels over the mountain — it illuminates but does not settle, warms but does not take root. This image captures the essence of the wanderer: moving through a stable world without becoming part of it, carrying one's own light.

Judgment and Image

The Judgment states: The Wanderer. Success through smallness. Perseverance brings good fortune to the wanderer. The Image shows fire on the mountain — the superior person is clear-minded and cautious in imposing penalties, and does not allow lawsuits to drag on. The counsel of smallness is key: the wanderer who makes modest, careful moves survives and even prospers; the wanderer who overreaches quickly finds themselves without shelter or support.

Core meaning

The central teaching of Lǚ is the art of being a stranger. The wanderer has no established position, no network of relationships, no accumulated goodwill to draw on. Everything must be earned fresh in each new place. This requires a particular combination of qualities: inner self-sufficiency (not needing external validation), outer adaptability (fitting into new environments without losing oneself), and careful judgment (knowing when to move on).

The counsel of smallness is not about diminishing oneself but about appropriate scale. In foreign territory, grand gestures and ambitious claims are likely to be misread or resented. Small, careful, genuine actions build the trust that eventually creates a place for the wanderer. The fire that travels over the mountain illuminates without burning — it gives without taking, moves without destroying.
