Hexagram 61 — Zhōng Fú / Inner Truth (中孚)

Structure

Zhōng Fú is formed by Wind (Xun ☴) above Lake (Dui ☱). The wind moves over the lake, stirring it to its depths — the gentle penetration of truth reaching into the receptive openness of the heart. The hexagram's shape is also significant: the two solid lines at the top and bottom enclose two broken lines in the middle, creating an image of emptiness at the center — the open, receptive space where truth can dwell.

Judgment and Image

The Judgment states: Inner Truth. Pigs and fishes. Good fortune. It furthers one to cross the great water. Perseverance furthers. The Image shows wind over lake — the superior person discusses criminal cases in order to delay executions. The reference to pigs and fishes — the least receptive of creatures — suggests that genuine inner truth can reach even the most resistant. The image of delaying executions points to the power of sincere understanding to transform even the most extreme situations.

Core meaning

The central teaching of Zhōng Fú is that genuine inner truth has a power that no external force can match. When a person speaks or acts from a place of sincere, deeply held conviction — not performance, not strategy, but actual truth — something in others responds. The pigs and fishes, creatures of pure instinct, feel it; how much more will human beings, capable of understanding, be moved.

The empty center of the hexagram is the key image: inner truth requires an open, receptive space within. The person who is filled with their own opinions, agendas, and self-interest cannot hold genuine truth — there is no room for it. The cultivation of inner truth begins with the emptying of what is false, the release of what is merely habitual or self-serving.

In Liuyao readings, Zhōng Fú often appears when the querent needs to act from genuine conviction rather than calculation. The hexagram counsels authenticity over strategy, sincere expression over persuasive technique. It affirms that the truth one actually holds, expressed with genuine sincerity, will be more effective than any clever argument.

The counsel to cross the great water suggests that inner truth enables bold action. When one is grounded in genuine conviction, the risks that would otherwise seem overwhelming become manageable.
