Hexagram 60 — Jié / Limitation (节)

Structure

Jié is formed by Water (Kan ☵) above Lake (Dui ☱). The lake is contained by its banks; the water above represents the flow that the lake receives and holds. Together they depict the relationship between container and contained — the limitation that gives water its form and direction. The lake without banks would spread and dissipate; with banks, it becomes a reservoir of power.

Judgment and Image

The Judgment states: Limitation. Success. Galling limitation must not be persevered in. The Image shows water over lake — the superior person creates number and measure, and examines the nature of virtue and correct conduct. The distinction between proper limitation and galling limitation is crucial: the former enables and directs, while the latter merely constricts and exhausts. The superior person's task is to find the measure that serves life rather than strangling it.

Core meaning

The central teaching of Jié is that limitation is not the opposite of freedom but its precondition. The musician who masters scales and theory is more free, not less — the constraints of form enable expression that would otherwise be impossible. The budget that limits spending enables the savings that create future freedom. The discipline that limits immediate gratification enables the development of lasting capacity.

The hexagram follows Huàn (Dispersion) in the sequence — after the dissolution of rigid, frozen structures, Jié describes the establishment of new, living boundaries. The difference between the frozen rigidity of the past and the living limitation of Jié is that the latter serves the flow of life rather than blocking it. It is the riverbank, not the dam.

In Liuyao readings, Jié often appears when the querent needs to establish or accept appropriate boundaries — in their work, their relationships, their use of resources, or their personal conduct. The hexagram affirms the value of self-discipline and proper measure while warning against the error of excessive restriction. The goal is the limitation that enables, not the limitation that merely denies.

The reference to examining virtue and correct conduct points to the ethical dimension of Jié: proper limitation is not arbitrary but grounded in a clear understanding of what serves genuine flourishing. The superior person does not limit themselves randomly but according to a considered understanding of what is truly valuable.

When Jié appears in a reading, it signals a time for establishing proper boundaries and measure. For career questions, it may indicate the need for clearer scope, better resource management, or more disciplined focus. For personal matters, it may counsel the establishment of healthy limits.
