Hexagram 53 — Jiàn / Development (渐)

Structure

Jiàn is formed by Wind (Xun ☴) above Mountain (Gen ☶). The wind moves gently and persistently above the mountain — not the sudden gust but the steady breeze that gradually shapes the landscape. The mountain below provides the stable foundation from which development proceeds. Together they depict patient, persistent movement grounded in stability.

Judgment and Image

The Judgment states: Development. The maiden is given in marriage. Good fortune. Perseverance furthers. The Image shows a tree growing on the mountain — the superior person abides in dignity and virtue, in order to improve the mores. The marriage metaphor is significant: a proper marriage follows a sequence of rituals and cannot be rushed. The tree on the mountain grows slowly but becomes deeply rooted and enduring.

Core meaning

The central teaching of Jiàn is that genuine development cannot be forced. Each stage must be completed before the next can begin, and attempting to skip stages leads to instability. The wild goose lands on the riverbank before the cliff, on the cliff before the tree — each landing is appropriate to its moment, and the sequence cannot be reversed.

This is a hexagram of process and patience. The emphasis is not on the destination but on the quality of each step. When each stage is completed properly, the next stage becomes possible naturally. When stages are skipped or rushed, the foundation is weak and the structure eventually collapses.
