Hexagram 49 — Gé / Revolution (革)

Hexagram 49 describes revolution — the fundamental transformation of existing structures when they have become untenable. Gé is not mere reform but a complete shedding of the old skin, a radical renewal that, when the time is right, brings lasting good fortune.

Structure

Gé is formed by Lake (Dui ☱) above Fire (Li ☲). Fire rises while water descends — the two forces oppose each other fundamentally. This mutual opposition creates the dynamic tension that drives transformation. The lower trigram Li also represents clarity and illumination, suggesting that revolution must be grounded in clear understanding of what must change and why.

Judgment and Image

The Judgment states: Revolution. On your own day you are believed. Supreme success. Perseverance furthers. Remorse disappears. The Image shows fire in the lake — the superior person sets the calendar in order and makes the seasons clear. The reference to the calendar is significant: revolution is not arbitrary destruction but the restoration of proper order. Just as the calendar marks the turning of seasons, true revolution aligns human affairs with natural rhythms.

Core meaning

The central teaching of Gé is that revolution is sometimes not only justified but necessary. When existing structures have become corrupt, oppressive, or simply no longer fit for purpose, clinging to them causes more harm than the disruption of change. The hexagram validates the impulse toward radical transformation while counseling that timing and legitimacy are everything.

The phrase "on your own day you are believed" points to the importance of timing. Revolutionary change that comes too early is dismissed as reckless; change that comes too late is seen as desperate. The right moment is when the old order has clearly exhausted its mandate and people are ready to accept something new. At that point, the revolutionary is believed and supported.

In Liuyao readings, Gé often appears when the querent is facing a situation that cannot be improved incrementally — where the entire framework must be reconsidered. This might be a career change, the end of a relationship, a move to a new city, or a fundamental shift in values. The hexagram does not counsel change for its own sake, but it affirms that when the time for revolution has come, hesitation only prolongs suffering.

The disappearance of remorse is also significant: after a true revolution, the regret and second-guessing that accompany half-measures dissolve. When the change is complete and correct, there is nothing to regret.

In divination

When Gé appears in a reading, it signals that fundamental change is either underway or necessary. For career questions, it may indicate a complete change of direction rather than incremental advancement. For relationships, it may point to the need for a radical renegotiation of terms or a clean break.

Gé is favorable for bold decisions, endings that clear the way for new beginnings, and situations where the old order has clearly failed. It is unfavorable for maintaining the status quo, half-hearted reforms, or changes made without clear vision of what should replace the old.
