Shēng is formed by Earth (Kun ☷) above Wind/Wood (Xun ☴). Wood grows upward through the earth — the tree pushing steadily toward the surface and beyond. The lower trigram Xun represents gentle penetration and the persistent, flexible quality of wood; the upper Kun represents the earth, receptivity, and the nurturing support that enables growth. Together they depict a situation where steady, persistent effort is supported by a receptive environment and produces genuine, sustainable advancement.

Judgment and Image

The Judgment states: Pushing Upward has supreme success. One must see the great man. Fear not. Departure toward the south brings good fortune. The Image shows wood growing within the earth — the superior person of devoted character heaps up small things in order to achieve something high and great. The counsel to see the great man suggests that seeking guidance and support from those with greater wisdom or authority is appropriate and beneficial at this time. The image of heaping up small things is the key: great heights are reached through the accumulation of consistent, modest efforts.

Core meaning

The central teaching of Shēng is that genuine advancement is organic and cumulative. It does not come through a single dramatic act but through the steady accumulation of small, consistent efforts over time. The tree does not force its way through the earth — it grows through it, finding the path of least resistance while maintaining its direction, adapting to obstacles without abandoning its upward orientation.
