Hexagram 45 — Cuì / Gathering Together (萃)

Structure

Cuì is formed by Lake (Dui ☱) above Earth (Kun ☷). The lake rests upon the earth — water gathering in a natural basin, collecting what flows toward it. The lower trigram Kun represents receptivity and the earth's capacity to support and nourish; the upper Dui represents joy, openness, and the pleasure of gathering. Together they depict a situation where the conditions for genuine community are present — a receptive foundation and the joy of coming together.

Judgment and Image

The Judgment states: Gathering Together. Success. The king approaches his temple. It furthers one to see the great man. This brings good fortune. Perseverance furthers. To bring great offerings creates good fortune. It furthers one to undertake something. The Image shows the lake over the earth — the superior person renews their weapons in order to meet the unforeseen. The image of the king at the temple points to the importance of a sacred center — something that gives the gathering its meaning and direction. The image of renewing weapons is a reminder that gatherings also attract danger, and that vigilance is part of wisdom.

Core meaning

The central teaching of Cuì is that genuine community requires a worthy center. People can gather for many reasons — shared interest, mutual benefit, proximity, or habit. But a gathering that endures and produces genuine good must be organized around something that transcends individual self-interest: a shared purpose, a common value, a genuine commitment to something larger than any individual member.

The hexagram also speaks to the importance of leadership in gatherings. The king at the temple is not merely a figurehead — he is the living embodiment of the center around which the community gathers. When leadership is genuine, the gathering is coherent and productive. When leadership is absent or corrupt, the gathering disperses or turns destructive.

In Liuyao readings, Cuì often appears when the querent is involved in building or participating in a community, organization, or collective endeavor.
