Hexagram 58 — Duì / The Joyous Lake (兑)

Hexagram 58 is the doubled trigram of Lake — joy upon joy, openness upon openness. Duì describes the quality of genuine joy: not the forced cheerfulness of performance but the natural, open delight that arises from inner strength and expresses itself in connection with others.

Structure

Duì is formed by Lake (Dui ☱) above Lake (Dui ☱) — the same trigram doubled. The Lake trigram has one yin line at the top above two yang lines, representing the open, receptive surface above a strong, full interior. Doubled, this creates an image of sustained, mutual joy — two lakes reflecting each other, each amplifying the other's openness. The strength is within; the openness is expressed outward.

Judgment and Image

The Judgment states: The Joyous. Success. Perseverance is favorable. The Image shows lakes resting on one another — the superior person joins with friends for discussion and practice. The image of friends discussing and practicing together captures the social nature of Duì's joy: it is not solitary pleasure but the delight of shared inquiry, mutual encouragement, and the pleasure of learning together.

Core meaning

The central teaching of Duì is that genuine joy is both an inner quality and a social force. The lake's structure — strong within, open without — describes the foundation of authentic joy: it arises from inner fullness and expresses itself as openness to others. Joy that comes from inner emptiness and seeks to fill itself through external stimulation is not Duì's joy; it is a counterfeit that exhausts rather than sustains.

The doubled lake also suggests that joy is contagious and self-reinforcing. When two people of genuine inner strength meet in openness, their joy amplifies each other's. This is the dynamic of true friendship, genuine collaboration, and the pleasure of shared learning — each person brings their own fullness, and the meeting creates something greater than either could achieve alone.

In Liuyao readings, Duì often appears when the querent is in or approaching a period of genuine connection and shared joy. The hexagram affirms the value of this joy while counseling perseverance — the reminder that joy, like all good things, requires tending. The lake must be replenished; the friendship must be nurtured; the practice must be continued.

The warning implicit in the structure is also worth noting: the yin line at the top can represent the mouth — the opening through which joy is expressed but also through which it can be dissipated. Genuine joy is expressed with discernment, not broadcast indiscriminately.

In divination

When Duì appears in a reading, it signals a time of genuine joy, connection, and shared pleasure. For career questions, it may indicate a period of productive collaboration and mutual encouragement. For relationships, it affirms the quality of genuine connection and counsels nurturing it.

Duì is favorable for friendship, collaboration, shared learning, and situations requiring openness and genuine connection. It is unfavorable for isolation, forced cheerfulness, or situations where one's inner resources are depleted.
