Hexagram 40 — Xiè / Deliverance (解)
Hexagram 40 describes the moment when tension breaks and obstruction lifts — the release that follows a period of difficulty. Like thunder and rain clearing the oppressive heat of summer, deliverance brings relief and the possibility of new movement. The counsel is to act swiftly to consolidate this liberation and to forgive what can be forgiven, clearing the way for genuine renewal.
Structure
Xiè is formed by Thunder (Zhen ☳) above Water (Kan ☵). Thunder moves above while water flows below — the storm that breaks the tension, releasing what has been pent up. The lower trigram Kan represents danger and difficulty; the upper Zhen represents movement and arousal. Together they depict the moment when the energy that has been blocked by difficulty suddenly finds release and begins to move again.
Judgment and Image
The Judgment states: Deliverance. The southwest furthers. If there is no longer anything where one has to go, return brings good fortune. If there is still something where one has to go, hastening brings good fortune. The Image shows thunder and rain setting in — the superior person pardons mistakes and forgives misdeeds. The counsel is clear: when the way is open, move quickly. When there is nothing more to do, return to simplicity. And in either case, release grievances rather than carrying them forward.
Core meaning
The central teaching of Xiè is that deliverance is a moment of opportunity that must be seized. When tension breaks and the way opens, hesitation allows the old difficulties to reassert themselves. The hexagram counsels swift, decisive action to consolidate the liberation — not reckless haste, but the kind of prompt, clear movement that takes advantage of a favorable moment before it passes.
The hexagram also emphasizes forgiveness as an essential part of genuine deliverance. The storm clears the air completely — it does not leave pockets of stale heat. Similarly, true release from difficulty requires releasing the grievances, resentments, and judgments that accumulated during the difficult period. Carrying these forward poisons the new beginning.
In Liuyao readings, Xiè often appears when a period of difficulty is ending or has just ended. The hexagram asks whether the querent is ready to move forward cleanly — whether they can release what needs to be released and act on the opportunities that are now available. It may also appear as a signal that a breakthrough is imminent and that the querent should be prepared to act quickly when it comes.
The hexagram also speaks to the importance of not over-complicating the return to normalcy. When the obstruction lifts, the temptation may be to analyze everything that happened, to assign blame, or to put elaborate new structures in place.
