Hexagram 37 — Jiā Rén / The Family (家人)
Hexagram 37 describes the principles that make a household — and by extension any community — function well. Right relationships, clear roles, genuine care, and consistent conduct are the foundations of a family that endures. What is cultivated within the home radiates outward into the world.
Structure
Jiā Rén is formed by Wind (Xun ☴) above Fire (Li ☲). Fire burns within while wind carries its warmth outward — the inner warmth of the hearth spreading into the world. The lower trigram Li represents clarity and illumination; the upper Xun represents gentleness, penetration, and the capacity to influence without force. Together they depict a situation where inner clarity and warmth naturally extend their influence through gentle, consistent presence.
Judgment and Image
The Judgment states: The Family. The perseverance of the woman furthers. The Image shows wind coming forth from fire — the superior person has substance in their words and duration in their way of life. The emphasis on the woman's perseverance points to the importance of the inner life of the household; the emphasis on substance and duration points to the need for consistency between what is said and what is done.
Core meaning
The central teaching of Jiā Rén is that the quality of our most intimate relationships determines the quality of everything we bring into the world. The family is the first school of character — the place where we learn (or fail to learn) how to relate, how to care, how to hold boundaries, and how to maintain integrity under the pressures of daily life.
The hexagram does not idealize the family. It describes what makes a family genuinely functional: clear roles that are honored rather than resented, genuine affection that is expressed rather than assumed, and consistent conduct that builds trust over time. When these elements are present, the family becomes a source of strength for all its members.
In Liuyao readings, Jiā Rén often appears when the querent's question touches on family dynamics, household matters, or the quality of their closest relationships. The hexagram asks whether the foundations of these relationships are sound — whether there is genuine care, clear communication, and consistent follow-through. It may also appear when the querent needs to bring the same quality of attention to their inner life that a good household requires.
The hexagram also speaks to the relationship between inner and outer. The fire within the home is the source of the wind that goes out into the world. What you cultivate in your most private relationships and in your own character is what you will bring to every other context. Jiā Rén asks whether your inner household is in order.
In personal development, Jiā Rén can indicate a time to attend to the foundations — to repair relationships that have been neglected, to establish clearer boundaries and expectations, or to bring more consistency to your own conduct. The work done here will support everything else.
In divination
When Jiā Rén appears in a reading, the focus is on the quality of close relationships and the foundations of the querent's inner life. For family questions, it may counsel attention to roles, communication, and the consistent expression of care. For career questions, it may suggest that the querent's effectiveness in the world depends on getting their personal foundations right first.
Jiā Rén is favorable for questions about home, family, close relationships, and inner cultivation. It is less directly relevant to questions about external achievement or public action.
