Hexagram 37 — Jiā Rén / The Family (家人)

Structure

Jiā Rén is formed by Wind (Xun ☴) above Fire (Li ☲). Fire burns within while wind carries its warmth outward — the inner warmth of the hearth spreading into the world. The lower trigram Li represents clarity and illumination; the upper Xun represents gentleness, penetration, and the capacity to influence without force. Together they depict a situation where inner clarity and warmth naturally extend their influence through gentle, consistent presence.

Judgment and Image

The Judgment states: The Family. The perseverance of the woman furthers. The Image shows wind coming forth from fire — the superior person has substance in their words and duration in their way of life. The emphasis on the woman's perseverance points to the importance of the inner life of the household; the emphasis on substance and duration points to the need for consistency between what is said and what is done.
