Hexagram 19 — Lin / Approach (临)

Hexagram 19 describes a moment of favorable approach — conditions are opening, influence is growing, and forward movement is supported. The counsel is to act with purpose while this window is available, because the hexagram also carries a warning that such openness does not last indefinitely.

Structure

Lin is formed by Earth (Kun ☷) above Lake (Dui ☱). The earth extends broadly above while the lake opens below — a vast, receptive expanse meeting an open, joyful body of water. The lower trigram Dui brings joy and communication; the upper Kun brings receptivity and nurturing support. Two strong yang lines rise from below into a field of yin, suggesting growing light and expanding influence.

Core meaning

Lin carries the sense of drawing near to something — approaching a goal, a person, a position of influence, or a moment of fulfillment. The character itself depicts someone looking down from a height, overseeing with care. There is both authority and attentiveness in this image: the one who approaches does so with awareness and responsibility.

The hexagram is associated with the twelfth month in the traditional Chinese calendar, when yang energy is growing after the winter solstice. Two yang lines have risen; four yin lines remain above. The light is increasing but has not yet reached its peak. This is a time of genuine momentum — not the explosive burst of full yang, but the steady, confident advance of something that is clearly gaining ground.

The traditional text includes a caution: by the eighth month there may be misfortune. This is not a threat but a reminder that favorable conditions are temporary. The window of approach will eventually close, and what was not accomplished during the open period will become harder to achieve. Act while the door is open.

In Liuyao readings, Lin often appears when the querent is in a genuinely favorable position and needs encouragement to move forward rather than hesitate. It can also appear when someone in authority is approaching the querent's situation — a supervisor, a potential partner, an opportunity that is coming toward them rather than requiring them to chase it.

In divination

When Lin appears in a reading, the primary message is: the time is favorable, move forward. Secondary questions include how long this favorable period will last and what specifically needs to be accomplished before conditions shift. The hexagram rewards decisive, purposeful action taken while the window is open.

Lin is generally very favorable for questions about new ventures, relationships, career advancement, and any situation where the querent is wondering whether to proceed. It is less relevant for situations requiring retreat or consolidation.
