Folk Chart

Chinese Gender Calendar 2027

The Qing-palace gender chart (清宫图) is one of the most famous pieces of Chinese folk culture: enter the mother’s birth date and the conception date, and it maps lunar age and lunar month to a boy-or-girl guess. Below: an interactive predictor, the full traditional chart, and an honest note on what it is — and is not.

For folk entertainment only. The Chinese gender calendar has no scientific basis — its expected accuracy is about 50%, the same as chance. It is not medical advice and cannot predict or influence a baby’s sex. For any health or pregnancy question, consult a qualified medical professional.

仅供民俗娱乐。清宫图没有科学依据——其预期准确率约为 50%,与随机猜测无异。它不构成医疗建议,也无法预测或影响胎儿性别。任何健康或孕期问题,请咨询专业医师。

How the chart is read

The chart has two axes. The vertical axis is the mother’s lunar (nominal) age at conception: in the traditional count you are 1 sui (岁) at birth and gain a year at every lunar new year, so your nominal age is the conception lunar year minus your birth lunar year, plus one.

The horizontal axis is the lunar month of conception — the month of the actual conception date, not the first day of the last period. The cell where the two meet carries the traditional guess.

If the conception date lands in a leap lunar month, folk convention looks it up as the regular month of the same number (some lineages split leap months at mid-month — one of several places where versions of this chart disagree).

Where this chart comes from

The table reproduced here is the most widely published version of the "Qing palace chart" (清宫图 / 清宫表), transcribed cell by cell from major public reference sources whose tables agree with each other. Its claimed origin — a secret chart kept by the Qing imperial court — is folklore: no verifiable classical text contains it, and its true age and authorship are unknown. Provenance: 待考 (unverified). We present it as a cultural artifact, not as knowledge.

Frequently asked questions

How does lunar age (虚岁) work in the Chinese gender calendar?

The chart uses the traditional nominal age: you are 1 sui at birth and gain one year at each lunar new year, rather than on your birthday. Numerically, your lunar age at conception equals the conception lunar year minus your birth lunar year, plus one. Our predictor converts both dates to the lunar calendar and applies this count.

Does the Chinese gender predictor actually work?

There is no scientific evidence that it does. A baby’s sex is determined at fertilization by chromosomes, and no calendar can see that. With two possible outcomes, any guess is right about half the time — which is exactly the accuracy you should expect. Enjoy it as folklore, and rely on medical professionals for anything real.

What if my conception month spans two lunar months?

A specific conception date always falls inside exactly one lunar month — convert the actual date (our tool does this) rather than estimating. If you genuinely don’t know the date and it could fall on either side of a lunar month boundary, the chart’s answer may flip between the two months; treat that uncertainty as one more reason the chart is entertainment, not information. Conceptions in a leap lunar month are traditionally looked up as the regular month of the same number.

Want something with more substance?

The gender chart is a fixed folk table. A BaZi (Four Pillars) chart is the real tradition: your actual birth year, month, day and hour, computed into eight characters and read as a pattern — deterministic charting, honest interpretation.
